The Replacement-Lodge and Kitchen, is founded by Edward and Vinc, who are also the owners of Faculty of Caffeine. Located 10 mins walk away from custom, the replacement has become a popular hipster cafe among locals as well as Singaporeans. With its white building, minimalistic interior, great coffee, as well as good quality and affordable all-day brunch, the replacement is definitely one of the better cafes in JB.
Located at the corner lot along Jalan Dhoby, and one store away from TIP (read my review here), the replacement is a white colonial-style building which is not hard to find.
“A nook in the cityscape to celebrate good food & for the wanderlust to rest between wanders” – The Replacement L & K. White is the new black? If you like minimalist designs, you’ll be in love with the replacement.
You’ll be greeted by potted plants and this wooden cashier that looks more like an antique piano. The replacement is a self-service cafe, so do remember to order and pay first at the cashier. I believe this wasn’t conveyed properly to customers thus there were some complaints regarding this on their FB page. Even during my second visit, I sat there for quite a while waiting to order, then only realised it’s self-service. 😛
Barista in action. The small door at the back leads to their kitchen, took a glimpse and it was really tiny. Probably that’s why their service is quite slow at times.
I had to sprint here to take this shot before the next big group comes in haha. Look at the marbled walls and the arrangement of the lamps, kudos to them for the great interior design. Almost every corner of the place is insta-worthy. 😀
Kinfolk magazines up for grabs! And some bottled plants that you can use for your flat-lays. Such pretty tiles by the way! <3
Friendly Eggs Benny with Portobello Mushroom (RM25.90)
Poached eggs, buttery spinach, Portobello mushrooms and Hollandaise sauce on fluffy English muffins. You can also opt for smoked salmon/beef pastrami/turkey ham instead of mushroom. Huge mistake for me to choose Portobello on a weekend as it took way too long to cook… In fact, this dish took half an hour to arrive. :O
Oooh, perfectly poached eggs on well-toasted English muffins. Hollandaise sauce has great consistency and flavour as well. Finally, a cafe in JB that has satisfactory poaching skills and serves up to par Eggs Benedict.
Customized Breakfast (RM19.00)
During our second visit (on a weekday), we were too full to order The Breakfast Platter (RM26.90), which has almost everything, thus we decided to customize our own! Read some good reviews about their Muesli bread (RM6) and since I’m a huge fan of bread, I ordered that as well as fried spinach (RM6) and sautéed button mushroom (RM7).
I’m not too sure whether they make their own breads from scratch at the replacement but it was actually one of the better quality Artisan breads that I’ve tasted in JB. However, the oil from the spinach and mushrooms seeped into the bread after a while, turning the bread mushy. Some form of improvement to their plating will probably prevent this from happening.
B&B French Toast (RM18.90)
Homemade brioche bread pan-fried with egg, butter and cinnamon mix, served with caramelized banana, beef bacon, premier vanilla seeded ice cream and a touch of maple syrup. If you prefer berries, they have another version of french toast served with minty berries compote for the same price.
Everything was caramelized to perfection. The brioche was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The simultaneous explosion of hot and cold in my mouth is irresistible for me, but unfortunately there just wasn’t enough ice cream to go together with the brioche (I finished my ice cream before starting on my second brioche). Furthermore, the single strip of beef bacon was just out of place for me. Overall, this was still my favourite dish at the replacement, the hint of cinnamon and drizzle of maple syrup were tiny little elements that bound the dish together really well.
Hazelnut Latte (RM11.00)
The coffee here is pretty decent as well, fragrant and nutty, I have no complaints.
Overall, I really like the ambience and food served at the replacement, but they clearly need to improve on their service time, especially during the weekends, so just try to avoid the weekend crowds if possible. The replacement is also renowned for its Churros (with salted egg yolk dip), which I’ll be coming back for soon.
